from unravelled show.com:

“Fashion has always been a way of expressing oneself. Every morning people wake up and have to make the decision of how they want to present themselves to the world. It allows for the choice of creativity everyday. It is not surprising then that the creativity of fashion extends itself to those creating fashion and art. Opening up the discussions of fashion designers being inspired by art and artists being inspired by fashion, and their relevance to each other. As stated in Contemporary Textiles: the fabric of fine art:

“The growing symbiosis between textiles and art is generating a new body of consciousness. Just as textiles play a key role in moulding the body’s shape into stylized ‘second skin’ apparel or crafting rigid garments that define space around the body, they also lend themselves to the creation of sculptural shapes that explore new representations of the human form.”

Artistic garments have been explored by fashion designers such as Hussein Chalayan, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaulthier and more. Many artists explore their practices through the creation of garments, some notable artists including Nick Cave, Rebecca Belmore, and Yinka Shonibare. Each of these designers and artists have taken on their projects for various reasons, such as expanding the creativity of clothing, making a political statement, the exploration of materials, and fun.

Unravelled includes six Manitoba-based artists, some of whom identify as visual artists and others as fashion designers, who navigate the line that separates the genre of their practices. Teresa Burrows, Lisa Dyck, Lita Fontaine, Helga Jakobson, Roy Liang and Melanie Wesley have each created new work based in the craft of garment-making, unravelling the connections between garments and art.

Unravelled runs from March 8 – April 19, 2013 at the School of Art Gallery at the University of Manitoba, 180 Dafoe Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Unravelled ran from August 10 – October 6, 2012 at Gallery in the Park in Altona, Manitoba.  This exhibition is a project of the Manitoba Craft Council, with thanks to the Manitoba Arts Council, the WInnipeg Arts Council, Manitoba Lotteries and the Government of Manitoba for their generous support.
