Bands Vs Filmmakers, June 6 2013

“Cinematheque is by far Winnipeg’s most important portal connecting us to the great wide world from which truly innovative film originates .The venue is a treasure any city would be extremely lucky to have – and Winnipeg has it!” – Guy Maddin, Filmmaker

The Winnipeg Film Group’s Cinematheque and West End Cultural Centre join forces again to present BANDS VS FILMMAKERS III, the must see event of the year where all funds raised go to the support of Cinematheque.

With Winnipeg icon Ace Burpee as host, five of Winnipeg’s finest independent filmmakers present their film and video work live to accompany electrifying performances by five of Winnipeg’s hottest independent bands. Each artist will work individually with a particular band to create an incredible visual and musical experience. Filmmakers will project their work from the back of the hall which will be simultaneously screened behind each band’s performance.

The film and music mind melding experience begins at 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 6. Featured bands include some of Winnipeg’s finest including Mariachi GhostMahogany FrogFlying Fox & The Hunter GatherersJD Edwards Band, and Slattern performing highlights from the early German animated 1920s classic The Adventures of Prince Achmed – a huge hit at Cinematheque in February!

Each band is working with a different independent filmmaker including Ian Bawa (recent University of Winnipeg Student Film Festival award winner for Under The Neon Lights which won Best director, actor, screenplay and cinematography) and Leslie Supnet (illustrator and filmmaker, her films have travelled to 100 major festivals globally, and her poignant illustrations have appeared in national publications), Doreen Girard (filmmaker and musician as well as founding member of the Bent Light and Negative Space artist’s collectives), Nick Friesen (artist, filmmaker, animator, photographer and writer. He has written about the arts for Uptown and The Uniter and his films and music videos have screened across the province) and Lotte Reinger (Slattern and JP will reprise their fantastic sound score for Lotte Reinger’s early German animated classic).

A silent auction of fabulous prizes includes a completely re-mastered 7 DVD box set of animation pioneer Norman McLaren including rare unfinished films and cult film posters. You’ll also find Winnipeg Folk Fest passes, Jazz Winnipeg Festival tickets, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre passes, Royal Winnipeg Ballet tickets to Handmaids Tale, a signed Handmaids Tale book and more!
